Why Do People Blog?

440 Million Blogs

The number of blogs that are out there breathing and kicking our screens for our attention is breathtaking. Only today have been written more than 3 million blog posts. And this number is growing by the second…

Since January 1994 where the very first blog created up to today’s microblogging platforms, the art and craft of blogging are a major part of the internet’s growth and digital marketing evolution. We must admit that today’s blogs and bloggers are quite different from the blogs of yesteryears. But how much things may have changed, blogs & bloggers are the running blood inside The Giant: The Internet as we all know it.

And today? There are more than 440 million blogs in the air. All these blogs cover a huge variety of topics, from fashion to nutrition, from technology to finance, from traveling to marketing and many more. The last five years social media has taken the lion’s share of interest but even though under this digital dominance, blogs are equally vitally important in the digital landscape. If you think it through, 80% of social media actions are helping blogs and websites to elevate their traffic and brand awareness.

Why Do People Blog

Why Do We Blog?

It is obvious how much has blogging change the last 10 years, but the reasons or the goals that motivate each blogger to type from 500 to 1500 words every day have remained almost the same.

Communication and self-publishing are the top answers for almost every blogger out there. The need to share one’s passion is the ultimate booster for blogging. Then the need to create new ways to earn some extra financial income. People want to grow awareness, traffic, new clients, sell their work or services through different types of blogs, such as lifestyle blogs or fashion blogs, business or e-commerce blogs, journals or magazine blogs and many others.

Promote a Non-Profit Organization or a Noble Humanity Cause is a new addition to the blogosphere. Still, they try to share their mission and attract the community’s attention to their activities.

Writers show their work or sell their books directly through their blogs. Graphic Designers or Photographers are promoting their artwork and make their living via their blogs. In general professional networking is blowing throughout blogging. Webinars and educational remote learning centers, now have an extra cornerstone to building new clientele.

Why Do People Blog

The Very First Impulse

From 1st January 2015 up to 31st December 2017, I did a research on this topic and interviewed 800 bloggers from all over the world with these 4 questions:

  • Q1. Why do you blog?
  • Q2. When did you start blogging?
  • Q3. Does your blog meet your goals?
  • Q4. Do you remember the very first impulse that pushed you to start your blog?

No matter who old or how much money they may earn, almost all people respond with the same answer to the last question: “… To be absolutely honest, I started my blog just for the sake of communication. I needed a place to make my voice loud… I wanted to be  heard and wished to find other people to get closer… and make new friends…”

From one corner of the planet to the other,

people just want to meet other people.

Internet and blogging make this doable in ways that previous generations could not even dream of them. In my family, some of the oldest members used to find friends via the post office. Pen Pal friends. My oldest aunt had a Pen Pal friend from France for 20 years. They started to send letters to each other in 1949 at the age of 14. They managed to meet when they were both in their late 50s.

Nowadays they are 83 & 84 years old and very close friends. They both use social media and facetime to communicate. And my aunt asked me to teach her how to blog: “…Niece please, show me how to use a blog. I want to start one for the joy of making new friends and maybe share my life story.”

Do you remember when blogs started were addressed as online journals? Well, let’s come clean with ourselves and admit it. They are still in disguise, online journals! And the successful ones are those that have a more human and personal voice. The bold ones that dare to share their true story and put themselves out there, seem to gain people’s trust. It’s common sense, that if you can relate to “something” you never forget the person who made you feel this “something”.

After all, we are all humans that seek

acceptance and joy.

Blogging can provide both.

It is no secret that Digital Marketing Strategy is my passion. But I am a word lover since childhood. So most probably, you will find me either reading or writing something every single day. Due to the fact that business copywriting is an over full-time responsibility and most of my clients want fresh content every day, my hours are 60% dedicated to content creation.

I published 3.650 new website+blog posts throughout 2017. And … 14.650 original social media posts. At the same time, I was actively blogging on different platforms such as Medium, Pulse, Quora etc

Won’t get into the trouble to count the day-in-day-out digital community communication (comments, answers, groups interaction, emails) for all client’s accounts and my personal ones. Limitless… countless… and surprisingly very productive!

My Personal Tribute to Dyslexia

None of the above would be possible without the support of my family and my excellent working team. I am really grateful that I was lucky enough to have so loving and thoughtful people around me.

Allow me this post to support all people out there that are fighting dyslexia like me since childhood. My life story and all the accomplishments, that today are part of my life, is a living proof that even with all odds against a person’s potential there is absolutely nothing that he/she can’t reach and conquer.

My teachers and almost all doctors used to advise my parents not to expect anything great from me due to my severe dyslexia issue. “This child is destined to wash cars or clean houses. Is literally incapable to write even her name correctly. This child is a lost cause. Will never learn to use words properly.”

My name is Areti Vassou and despite my struggle with dyslexia – since the first day I learned to use words – today and 1.825.000 words later (only for the year 2017), I am in the position to be able to shout out loud to everyone:

You can do anything you want in life!

Commit yourself and keep trying!

Special Thank you Notes

Grammarly App is my digital angel and all published dictionaries are my safe place. It may takes me twice as much time to write each paragraph, but I do write and speak 6 languages. Infographics made with Canva.

Knows about style. Follow her tips and re-invent your best self!

It is not a secret that I have traveled all over the world and have met a lot of remarkable people. So many years on the go, it only takes me a minute to recognize a person who is truly passionate about his/her calling in life. Alexandra Katsaiti is the master of the first impression before the actual first impression. She knows Style. She’s got it!

I have met her on several occasions but we never shake hands or exchange our business cards. I know her work through many of my friends in VIP cycles in the USA. She is a hard working lady but also a visioner of great fashion. Her willingness to risk and play with what we call fashion rules is the main reason that she has the power to make you either hate her or adore her.

Living on the edge means that people will always love to hate you. She knows it and she doesn’t care… Just because she is living The Dream. She is a fulfilled and joyful person, generous enough to share her knowledge for free (with the ladies in the fashion game My Style Rocks). She is happy inside her skin and with what she does. And that ladies & gentlemen takes a lot of guts, in life!

During the fashion game My Style Rocks in Greece, she put a lot of effort to explain how to improve the style of each participant in order to elevate it to excellence. She was giving her expertise far more than it was needed. The urge to improve what you see is separating mediocracy from superiority. A genuine professional can’t act differently… it’s beyond his/her power to resist the need to make something or someone look fabulous.

+ Thank you, Santa!

Thank you, Santa!

For the best gift

The best gift ever is my Team!

In Digital Marketing Industry it is very difficult to meet people that are willing to try something that is less trendy or out of “the safe zone”. Despite the fact that by definition, digital + marketing are promoting innovating ideas, people are not so open to this constantly changing world… you would be surprised by the denial level in our industry. Well, to be honest accepting all this wave of rapid transformation, it’s easier said than done!

Healthy business teams are in a position to digest the incoming new information and smoothly add them to their everyday workflow. Great teams can insert all new elements with grace and productive friendly noise.

Taking the next step on this, a person should feel blessed if she/he is surrounded by active and restless minds that are capable to form opinions on their own, without needing to agree or follow your ways. A productive and challenging disagreement worths a million! We as humans can push forward our elevation only if we are under the pressure and need of changing the way we do things. Exactly the same happens in the business world. You must Change to Play!

Thank you, Santa!

Embrace Disagreements

Avoid “yes-to-all” people around you. Embrace voices that want to be heard. Hear them out!

Turn your head to the lion hearts, which are ready to take the risk of trying the less traveled path. Trust the new generation and the different way of thinking. Respect those that have the courage to show you any pitfalls. Being bold shows character. Being open to feedback shows Ethos and Pathos. Morality and Passion to improve.

Do what’s right, not what it’s easy brings great results. Excellent teams can do exactly that. Can disagree with the chief or with the strategy of a project. They can bring the house down and shake the industry rules, just because they are open to inspiration for every single project. And that is a blissful process of creation!

My team is the best thing that ever happened to me. They know how to hug the unknown in front of us and they enjoy the ride into all unmapped waters. We don’t do meetings, we cook our future with hard work, joy and passion – especially when we are in the non-meeting-room.

Thank you, Santa!

Stay Curious

Protect your passion and inspiration. Start your day with “Why”

This works for me the last 20 years. I start every new day with this attitude: “Why should I do that in this particular X way? Why not trying Y way for a change?” …. ” Let’s give it a try!”

Sometimes it is a disaster, but some other times it is amazingly successful. Ok, success puts food on the table but failure is what makes us experienced and unique. Knowing what to avoid or how to maneuver when the situation is out of hand, is priceless.

Last year a very good friend ask me what is the meaning of #ChristmasSpirit for me. And a couple of minutes later I replied: "Be brave enough to be your own Santa in life, not only for yourself but for the people around you, as well." Joy and happiness is a choice. As a matter of fact is a quality of action and a mindset that you form step by step in life. It is a whole process that embrace your mind and soul every single second… to stay commited to what makes you a better version of what you were yesterday… Grow the smile you want to see in the world. So Christmas is a celebration of kindness and pure joy and is all about the need to share them. 🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁 #Christmas #Joy #nice #kindness #igers #AretiVassou #Ideadeco #ContentCreation #instagram #igersgreece #Santa #Goodvibes #quotes #quoteoftheday #instaquotes #Greece ___________________________________________________ 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄 Photo Credits: @Regrann from @aretivassou – Welcome #December! It was a huge global project, but… our entire digital marketing team said the same thing:  the client didn’t need rebranding or a new website, but fresh content and a solid digital marketing strategy. So at the next appointment with the client, he opened the dossier and found a blank page. “Sorry, we will not offer this service to your company”, I said with a calm voice. “Why? Well, that’s a first!” he replied in an angry tone…”What do you mean by that?”

Me: “We won’t offer this service to your company because you don’t need it. Your website is magnificent and your brand is well established. But the lack of fresh content is killing your website and it could use a solid digital marketing strategy for social media and email marketing. Are you interested?”

[5 minutes pause]

Client: “Ok, tell me more! I am interested to hear more!”

The result? It is still a successful and ongoing digital project that generated  4 new ones, so far.

Stay Informed

New digital tools and trends rise every 4 hours. Try to stay informed but keep your feet on earth. Just because something is a trend doesn’t mean that is good for your business. Try before you judge and test before you sell it.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas!

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

Would love to read what was the best gift for you, which broke the ephemeral first excitement and increased in value over time.

For me, still the moment I got my first bicycle stands as the best gift ever. And everything after that compares to that everlasting excitement and joy that something is as precious and adventurous as that: The thrill of the ride!

What’s yours?

My Style Rocks Greece

Fashion Game Show

My Style Rocks is a studio based fashion show and game. The idea of this show was created by the company Global Agency, which is based in Istanbul, Turkey.

Established in 2006, Global Agency is one of the world’s leading ‘independent’ TV content distributor of TV series, formats and films for global markets. Global Agency was founded in the second half of 2006 with only 1 project and a team of 2 people.  It now has 120 projects and a team of 25 people.

The company’s slogan is “Content that Creates Buzz” and they live up to it through the distribution of their hit content, including Magnificent Century, 1001 Nights, Broken Pieces, Keep Your Light Shining, Perfect Bride and Shopping Monsters.

In just a few short years, they have become one of the fastest-growing distributors in the industry, thanks to their strong line-up of content and their experienced team. The company’s catalog includes formats and series from around the world, and due to its long-established relationships with some of the world’s most creative individuals and companies, is able to offer buyers the hottest new content throughout the year.

In September 2012, Global Agency entered the business of finished content distribution, trading under the banner of World Wide Entertainment, after acquiring the brand rights to the leading Australian factual entertainment distributor. World Wide Entertainment, for more than 15 years, was at the forefront of finished content distribution, selling thousands of hours of programming to its network of clients worldwide.

World Wide Entertainment is a joint venture between Global Agency and TIMS Productions, the makers of the hit series “Magnificent Century,” and is focused on representing premium finished programs. The new brand has created a fresh new catalog, acquiring the latest programming from some of the world’s biggest producers of Factual Entertainment, Reality, Documentaries and Lifestyle. Visit Global Agency’s website to discover their content: formats and series.

My Style Rocks Greece

My Style Rocks in Greece

For +14 weeks we followed a group of more than 14 female participants competing against each other. Every day of the week (Mon-Frid), each contestant presented a fashion concept and a 3 judges-panel ruled their grade; 1 for low and 5 for top stylish appearances.

My Style Rocks Show provided to the ladies a certain budget that they could use it as they wish for each week’s themes. It was obvious that all of them tried really hard to invest the given budget in new outfits, accessories, bags, shoes and bespoke outfits. In any case, their style choices were evaluated on a daily basis after their catwalk by the 3 judges-panel.

In Greece, the role of judges was given to well-established professionals in Fashion Industry: Alexandra Katsaiti, Stelios Koudounaris, Harris Christopoulos

The presenter of the show  Evagelia Aravani

The contestants:

The 6 finalists had to wait until the last Friday Fashion Show catwalk for the big cash prize. The audience voted for the winner.

The 6 finalists: Ramona, Vasiliki, Ioanna, Alexandra, Yvonne, Georgia

How they stand out

The first question that came to my head, when I saw this LinkedIn announcement, was:

” How did they manage to be among

the top voices on LinkedIn?”

So I spend 10 days studying their accounts and their digital footprints throughout all cyberspace. Due to my Digital Marketing background, my main focus was on the TOP VOICES LIST in Marketing & Social Media.

What it takes to be among the top voices?

Hard work and genuine input, for starters! These two are common in all of them.

Daniel Roth, LinkedIn Editor in Chief describes the whole process of screening evaluation:

“We use a combination of data and editorial signals to find the people that stand out among the incredible volume of LinkedIn conversations: tens of thousands of comments an hour, over a million posts a day, thousands of articles a week — and tens of millions more shares and likes.”

✵✵✵✵✵✵✵✵

“We screen for engagement (specifically the likes, comments and shares across each contributor’s articles, posts and videos); growth of followers tied to publishing activity; and the number of times the writer had been featured in editorial channels, a signal of high-quality content. We also emphasize the diversity of topics and voices.”

✵✵✵✵✵✵✵✵

“Then we sort by industry. The list reflects publishing activity over a 12-month period, from November 2016 to November 2017, and as with all LinkedIn Lists, we excluded LinkedIn and Microsoft employees from consideration.”

LinkedIn Numbers

As you can read 3 million users share content on LinkedIn weekly. Well, if you add all numbers will come to the astonishing conclusion that 156.000.000 users share content in a year. So being part of this list is a true accomplishment.

Various topics made many heads turn within LinkedIn’s 530 million members around the world:

  • The U.S. discussed everything from marketing to artificial intelligence
  • India’s honorees shared about startups and big data
  • The UK focused on the economy
  • France talked about energy and international relations
  • Germany favored business strategy and innovation

Globally, some topics drove high-interest conversations regarding news-driven topics like Brexit, the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and Uber’s ongoing challenges.

The Winning Formula

What really made a huge difference was the element of consistency and the in-depth communication with other members about a certain topic.

Numbers reveal the hard work behind each Top Voice acknowledgment. The 71% percent of Top Voices published at least once a month and in many cases, they published up to four times a month, on average.

Compared to all LinkedIn members that are actively writing and sharing in 2017, the Top Voices received on their posts, articles and videos:

  • 5X more comments
  • 72X more likes
  • 7X more shares

Each of Top Voices generated over 120,000 new follows this year, almost +330 new followers a day.

That is amazing! Isn’t it?

LinkedIn Native Video. We can find video-content on websites, on YouTube, on Instagram, on Snapchat and elsewhere.  Social Media Examiner points out that all marketers are planning to increase their usage of videos.
