Let’s Talk about May

May took its name from the Greek Goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May. Conversely, the Roman poet Ovid provides a second etymology, in which he says that the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for “elders,” and that the following month (June) is named for the iuniores, or “young people” (Fasti VI.88).

May Flowers

The most beautiful flowers are blooming during May. It is not a secret that I love flowers! May is good for my beloved peonies! And for gardenias, roses, snapdragons, anemones, anthuriums, lilacs, sweet peas, lily of the valley, tulips, orchids, amaryllis, freesia, muscari, daisies and so many others.

So what flowers are blooming in May in your country?

Urban Gardens

Having a small garden is a true blessing. Taking care of flowers while butterflies and birds are flying around you could add peace to your life.

Last year, we started a project under the name “Gaudi Backyard Project” and we collected 500 different broken tiles. People from all over the world send us their leftovers with a note. Now, all broken tiles are pilled up in a corner of our backyard, waiting to be installed at one of the walls. We plan to build an oasis for the wandering birds in the city.

In Greece, summer can be really exhausting for birds, bees and stray animals (cats & dogs). Although a lot of people are very thoughtful about stray animals and they care to provide them clean water and food, no one pays attention to the birds, bees and butterflies. But Ideadeco Team loves to watch our bird friends having a bath in their water corner after they have their fruity meals.

This week we noticed that many bees started to visit our new flowers. And what it seemed like a stupid idea (last year), now bees prove us wrong for doubting our original aim. Bees look so happy now that they can find fresh alive flowers in their area. Every day they bring new members to share the food.

You may find this a bit mellow but have in mind that for city people, the interest for flowers or birds or bees is not that common.
