It is a fact that people within different vulnerable groups have been impacted heavily due to the current COVID-19 crisis. As a result of the pandemic, there are now even more vulnerable people facing challenging circumstances.

Social Hackers Academy
At Social Hackers Academy, they care! They don’t want vulnerable people to be forgotten. That’s why we want to stand by their side and be part of the solution. SHA is shifting their classes to a new online platform and want to provide free code education.
Social Hackers Academy’s managing team, volunteers, supporters and ambassadors are welcoming students from vulnerable groups, from different countries, ages, and backgrounds who want to learn to code and start a new future as web developers wherever they are. With the right tools, those with less privilege can aspire to create positive change.
In order to maintain the scholarships and support more and more students, Social Hackers Academy is launching a crowdfunding campaign that will help them reach more people to improve their life.

About SHA Mission
Social Hackers Academy (SHA) is a non-profit coding school for people in vulnerable groups. They have supported refugees, migrants, and unemployed citizens from Greece and several EU countries. The academy offers a 7-months full-stack development course, sponsored and supported by SHA. Once the students finalize the course, SHA connects their graduates with HR managers to promote integration.

SHA wants to keep on providing coding education to vulnerable groups during COVID-19 times and they have migrate their course to an online platform: Athena.
SHA equips its students with both digital skills and technological tools, as well as interpersonal skills and career counselling sessions. Moreover, through establishing relationships with tech companies, participating in tech conferences and hosting monthly events with companies representatives. SHA aims to connect its graduates to a broad network of tech professionals and increase employment opportunities.
As part of Social Hackers Academy DNA, education is the key for them. It brings the world closer and opens new possibilities. Coding will be relevant for the next 10+ years and SHA wants to increase awareness on the need for digital skills acquisition by disadvantaged groups, as a way towards their economic and social integration.

Social Hackers Academy wants to keep on offering its coding classes during COVID-19. And we have put all our efforts into it, so don’t give up on your dreams!
How our sponsoring will make a difference?
30 students will be able to receive all the benefits of this 7 month educational course by Social Hackers Academy. All of us we will be sponsoring 30 students to join the Coding Academy. 30 people will have a real chance to create better living conditions through this free educational course.
Currently, you can find similar courses to SHA’s in the market, but their cost is around 30.000 USD. Due to SHA shift to online and their approach to provide accessible education, their courses are worth 1.000 euros each. Therefore, with the 30.000 euros that SHA wants to achieve during this crowdfunding campaign, they want to welcome 30 talented students to their academy.
What will the students receive?
The students will receive the best education for:
- Full stack development course. Here, they will learn javascript, frontend and backend development to become web developers, with the right technical skills to enter their job search.
- Soft skills course. Tech HR managers agree on the importance of soft skills and we work through them during our course but put an extra emphasis on them to support our students during the integration process and to get a job.
- How to get a dev web job. From the basics of setting a Linkedin page, where to look for a job, what to offer or practice mock interviews, we support our students and put them in touch with our network of supportive companies.
During this SHA set of courses, students will also have a support network for their soft skills. SHA students will have three main people supporting them:
- One person who will do code review.
- A mentor, who will meet with the student one hour per week. Mentors are not focused on hard skills, but the soft skills and the career path.
- Online technical assistants (OTA), who are a group of people volunteers who are constantly online who will answer questions any time.
Where is the course going to take place?
Everywhere. SHA course is going online with their new “Athena Platform”, as an answer to the constant development and COVID-19 crisis. SHA wants to reach as many people as possible and online makes it real. SHA has partnerships with NGOs across different countries so that they can offer computers and connectivity to those lacking access to them.
We want to be accessible and global: online is the answer for us.
Why are we doing this?
Because we imagine a world where people have access to equal education that leads them to opportunities and we want to make it happen. We want to be part of the solution!
We want to be part of the force that helps SHA to keep on offering accessible coding courses that grant a different future to vulnerable people. Because coding will be relevant in the coming 10 years, web development demand is greater than supply and it does grant a bullet-proof future: helping one student we are creating a support network around that person.

When will they receive this set of courses?
Generally, SHA develops two sets of courses per year and they welcome 30 students with scholarships. Depending on their funding, they will be able to increase the number of courses that they can offer and the number of scholarships to their students.
Our aim is to offer as many as possible to increase the number of opportunities, promote integration and create a supportive and strong network. For now, during this crowdfunding campaign our goal is to get to 30.000 euros, which will help us get 30 students on board, starting by the end of October.
What SHA will do with your donations?
SHA want tos tackle COVID-19 crisis and its impact within vulnerable groups. That’s why they want to launch another web development class for 30 students by the end of this year and during 2021 with their new online platform. But we cannot do this without your help. Together with you, we will be able to:
- Run one seven-month web development class for 30 students
- Deliver soft skills training and career coaching to them
- Foster the long-term integration of vulnerable people
- Change the life of 30 people through tech education

SHA Team
SHA team is a group of passionate people, probably that is the best way to describe them. All volunteers support SHA across the whole organisation, from teaching, to supporting students or designing their social media assets. The SHA staff coordinates all the big and small details that keeps this course up and running.
